Free virtual series to explore digital transformation
Resiliency is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It is the concept of “essential toughness” that is often partnered with the term “safe cities.” To that end, municipalities worldwide are investing in technological solutions aimed at increasing city resilience and future-proofing them against what’s to come.
While preparing for a better response to future events is an attractive proposition, research has also found that implementing smart technologies now can make an immediate impact on crime rates and city livability. For example, a 2018 study published by the McKinsey Institute suggests assaults, robberies/burglaries, and auto thefts could be reduced by 30 to 40 percent through the implementation of new technologies.
Technology isn’t a quick fix for crime, but it plays a leading role in crime response and reduction strategies. According to IDC, three key drivers are influencing public safety technology trends around the world: digital transformation and reinvention, the future of digital trust, and digital intelligence.
Virtual collaboration
In an era of unprecedented change and disruption, how do public safety agencies overcome the burden of legacy technologies and pivot to digital transformation? Moreover, as demand for emergency services and the complexity of those services increases, how can cities and regions equip their police and emergency services with the support they need to build trust and keep citizens safe?

“Technology brings new opportunities and new challenges,” says David Armstrong, vice president and general manager of Hexagon in Canada. “We’ve invited experts to present on a number of topics. For example, how do you turn data into a strategic asset for transparency and accountability?”
Armstrong notes that trust in public safety and law enforcement agencies has significantly waned in recent years. Recent violent incidents across North America have exacerbated frustrations among citizens and calls for transparency have moved into the legal realm in many cases. In April, Toronto’s city council voted to have an ombudsman oversee Toronto police to increase accountability.
Public safety organizations create a plethora of data that could be leveraged and communicated internally and externally to enhance transparency and accountability.
