Yesterday, Minister Ng met virtually with ventureLAB – a Markham-based technology hub – to announce $370,000 in funding for women entrepreneurs through the Tech Undivided program under our Women Entrepreneurship Strategy. Tech Undivided supports women entrepreneurs in the tech sector to generate revenue and investment capital, by putting them on a sustainable path to growth and long-term success.

Also – the COVID Alert app is now available in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick! It not only keeps you safe, but it’ll also slow the spread of the virus and help prevent future waves. And the more people who download it, the more useful it’ll be – download today if you haven’t already!

WEEK IN REVIEW

Monday, September 14th

On Monday, together with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, our government announced more than $8.7 million for four projects in Alberta through the Green Municipal Fund that will improve energy efficiency, create well-paying jobs, and help achieve our climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This investment will strengthen local economies as we work towards a sustainable economic recovery from COVID-19.

Tuesday, September 15th

On Tuesday, the United States announced its decision to lift its unjustified tariffs on imports of Canadian aluminum. Minister Ng and Deputy Prime Minister Freeland welcomed the decision and thanked everyone who worked together as one Team Canada to achieve this outcome on behalf of hard-working Canadians in the aluminum industry.

Wednesday, September 16th 

On Wednesday, Minister Ng, and her cabinet colleagues, wrapped up a Cabinet Retreat. Ahead of the Throne Speech next week, the team worked on a plan to keep Canadians safe and healthy, while rebuilding our economy in support of workers, business owners, and families across the country.

Following the Cabinet Retreat, our government announced the next steps of the Safe Restart Agreement. $19 billion dollars will now flow to the provinces and territories for priorities like testing and contact tracing, healthcare and mental health, child care, support for seniors, and more.

Also on Wednesday, our government announced an investment of $24.8 million through Sustainable Development Technology Canada in nine small businesses across Canada that are using innovative solutions to tackle climate change, support well-paying jobs, and create a more sustainable future.

Thursday, September 17th

On Thursday morning, Minister Ng participated in a webinar with the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce – they discussed working together as an international community to rebuild our economies and explored the many trade opportunities for our businesses and people between India and Canada.

Also on Thursday, Minister Ng spoke with Ville Skinnari, Finland’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. They discussed how our two countries can work together towards an economic recovery that is sustainable and inclusive for all. They also spoke about the importance of rules-based international trade, and how Canadians and Finns alike continue to benefit from opportunities from the Canada-EU Comprehensive Trade Agreement (CETA).

  2. Contact your local financial institution. Since we know most small businesses have a relationship with their local financial institution already, we’ve worked with the financial sector to increase their lending capacity to support you in this challenging time. They are an excellent first resource.
  3. Consult the Canadian Business Resilience Network, a partnership between our government and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to help your business prepare, persevere, and prosper through this crisis.
  4. Check out the new PPE Supply Hub – Canadian businesses in need of personal protective equipment, and businesses looking to sell these supplies can go to this hub to connect.
  5. Make the POST Promise to show employees and customers that you take COVID-19 prevention seriously by practicing key health and safety steps and maintain a safe workplace.
  6. Consult the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety – for a free online course to provide businesses with all the information they need to reopen safely.
