December 7, 2023 – Aboriginal Legal Services (ALS) held its Annual General Meeting this month to present to the members the annual report. The meeting was opened in a good way with a teaching by Elder Ed Sackaney and opening drum song by Blackwolf Hart. The annual report included the President’s message, the Executive Director’s report, the annual financial statements, a presentation on the progress of ALS’s Strategic Plan, and the election of new board members.
The President’s message consisted of thanking the ALS team, the Board, the community, and the progress ALS has made this past year. Chantell Barker, Christa Big Canoe, and Jonathan Rudin presented the Executive Director’s report, which provided information and updates on ALS programs, the Legal Clinic, and special projects.
This year, the invited speaker was Jana Goerge, who is with Sisco Consulting. Sisco Consulting has been awarded the contract to create a Strategic Plan for ALS. She presented on the Organizational Review and the consultation processes with the staff, clients, and stakeholders. Jana provided the feedback that was received from the community and the direction moving forward.
Finally, the Annual General Meeting concluded with thanking the outgoing Board Members and having an election for new Board Members. The ALS Board positions are at full capacity with Shadow members learning the ropes to fill in any upcoming vacancies. The meeting concluded with a closing drum song and words of encouragement by the elder.
