The following regulatory initiative was published in Canada Gazette, Part I on June 1, 2019.
This proposed amendment to sections 605.38 and 605.40 of the CARs would mandate that Canadian aircraft, with the exception of gliders, balloons, airships, ultra-light aeroplanes and gyroplanes, be equipped with a 406 MHz ELT onboard and that foreign aircraft operating in Canada be equipped with a serviceable emergency beacon that transmits on a 406 MHz frequency.
These proposed amendments address Transportation Safety Board (TSB) recommendation A16-01, recommending that all Canadian-registered aircraft and foreign aircraft operating in Canada that require installation of an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) be equipped with a 406 MHz ELT in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards.
A delayed implementation for certain provisions is proposed.
