From the Desk of Carolyn…

February 1, 2022

On March 17th, 2022, the MCAS will host its 77th Annual General Meeting in Regina. This meeting provides an opportunity for the membership to review various reports including our year end financial statements. It is also when the members elect their board of directors.

A board that truly adds value is not just a group of high performing individuals. A good board is a balanced team with complementary skill sets that allows them to work together to make the most effective decisions for the association.  The full participation of every board member helps to ensure that we have an effective board of directors.

I often hear people comment a few things when I ask if they would be interested in volunteering for a position on the board. Most common is that they don’t have time.  As an association we strive to ensure that we make the most effective use of your time as a board member.  As the ED it is my responsibility to ensure that you have all the information you need so that you can make informed decisions during the meetings. Long, drawn out board meetings are ineffective.

I also hear that the board is comprised of same group of people every year. Well, yes sometimes it is the same people. The research shows that 10% do 90% of the volunteering. The current board would be the first to say that we need to see some new members stepping forward to volunteer. You want to have a good mix of old and new.

At the end of the day this is your association. You must have thoughts, ideas, and opinions on how to improve your association and the industry.  I challenge you to reach out to me and have a conversation about putting your name forward to sit on the board.
