On March 17th we had the pleasure of co-hosting an Industry Panel with the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH). CIPH President and General Manager, Ralph Suppa acted as moderator for the event with the following panelists offering their expertise:
- James Gates, Director, Customer Solutions SaskEnergy
- Keith Hanson, Sun Ridge Residential Inc.
- Dave Hughes, Technical Advisor, Codes and Standards, CIPH
- Luc Kadziolka, Mr. Plumber and MCAS Board member
- Alex Miller, President Big Block Construction
- Nathan Rysavy, Project Manager, Black and McDonald Ltd. and MCAS Board member
A variety of topics were to be discussed however, the panelists and audience had an insightful and well-rounded discussion on the topic of Net Zero Building. It was agreed that industry needs to move towards a sustainable and effective low carbon economy. Customers and clients are looking toward energy sources that provide comfort and affordability. Heard throughout the dialogue was the view that industry must be proactive rather than reactive and that collaboration with industry stakeholders and government will be necessary as the demand for clean, renewable energy increases. No doubt there will be some in depth discussions that will take place in the coming months with CIPH and others to map out a path to effectively navigate an approach that can make net zero building attainable, affordable, and workable.

Overall, the MCAS had a successful year on both the membership recruitment and advocacy fronts. The Association books are in good order, and we finished 2022 in a stable financial state.
We wrapped up the AGM with a presentation to MCAS Past President and MCA Canada National Director Kim Skjonsby. Due to Covid 19, we were unable to present Kim with his President’s ring when he finished his term in 2020. We were delighted to be able to ensure he received the much-deserved recognition for volunteering his time to MCAS and MCA Canada.
