Lori 2025 PicWith close to thirty years in public procurement, I’ve witnessed its evolution from a transactional or back-office function to a strategic partner that can deliver real value to an organization. Whether the strategic plan prioritizes being future ready (sustainability), exceptional service, economic vitality, service excellence, or good governance, aligning procurement activities ensures that every tax dollar spent contributes to efficient and effective outcomes.

As procurement professionals, we each play a vital role in the decision-making process, and those decisions help shape the services the public receives—whether in government, healthcare, or education. When procurement is thoughtfully aligned with strategic goals, it creates opportunities for innovation, encourages creativity, strengthens accountability, and delivers long-term value.

Despite its impact, procurement is not always recognized as a key contributor to strategic planning. So how do we change that? Communication is essential. Clearly demonstrating the value procurement brings—to your team, leadership, and other stakeholders—is a critical first step in elevating procurement’s role within an organization. This involves sharing success stories that highlight procurement’s contributions, establishing “meet & greets,” “lunch and learns,” or presentations that showcase alignment with strategic goals, and tailoring messaging to different audiences to build understanding and support across the organization.

One way to start is by integrating procurement into project planning early on. This allows procurement professionals to help shape strategies that reflect organizational priorities and ensures alignment with the corporate vision.

Policies also play a vital role. Procurement policies should be reviewed and updated to reflect strategic goals, reinforcing procurement’s role in achieving broader objectives.

Measuring performance is another important activity. Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) that show how procurement supports strategic goals—and including those metrics in reports—helps build credibility and visibility.

Collaboration is key. Engaging with internal teams, suppliers, and professional networks not only strengthens alignment but also fosters innovation and creative problem-solving.

Capacity building is equally important. Regardless of the size of your procurement team, creating opportunities for cross-functional learning brings diverse perspectives to the table and enhances strategic thinking.

And finally, risk management should be embedded in every procurement activity. Whether it’s navigating tariff impacts during budget development, addressing vendor sourcing challenges or performance, proactive risk management protects strategic investments and ensures continuity.

By taking deliberate steps to elevate procurement practices and integrate them into corporate activities, can help to ensure that procurement decisions support long-term strategic goals and deliver meaningful value.
