It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague and friend Darren Smits on May 20, 2020.
Darren was loved and cherished by many people, most notably his children Kristian and Aliyah.
Darren was instrumental in helping form the modern day exempt market into what it is today having been a founding director and member of the National Exempt Market Association (NEMA) and playing a pivotal role in the merger of NEMA and the Private Capital Markets Association of Canada (PCMA).
Prior to joining Calgary based Burstall LLP where he became Managing Partner, Darren was a Partner at Miller Thomson LLP. Darren practiced primarily in the areas of Private Capital, Real Estate, Franchising and General Corporate Law.
Darren’s energy, outgoing personality, and positive attitude will be sorely missed by all of us at the PCMA and in the industry at large.
